A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server. It's useful on public Wi-Fi at cafés, airports and hotels. It isn't a magic privacy shield, though. Here's what Australians should know.
1. VPNs are legal in Australia
Using a VPN is generally legal in Australia. Anything that's illegal without a VPN is still illegal with one.
2. Know what a VPN protects
It encrypts your traffic so the local network and your internet provider can't see which sites you visit, though your provider can still see that you're using a VPN. It also masks your IP address from websites.
3. Know what it doesn't
It doesn't stop malware or phishing, and websites you log in to still know who you are. The VPN provider can see your traffic metadata instead of your ISP.
4. Public Wi-Fi is the strongest use case
On open networks a VPN adds a useful layer, though most sites already use HTTPS.
5. Streaming: read the terms
Some people use VPNs to watch their home streaming services while travelling. Streaming services may block VPNs or restrict this in their terms, and results vary.
6. Check the logging policy and audits
Look for a clear no-logs policy, ideally independently audited, and where the company is based.
7. Look at speed and servers
Choose a provider with servers in or near Australia for better speeds.
8. Avoid sketchy free VPNs
Some free VPNs have been found to collect and sell data. Paid or reputable free tiers are safer.
9. Weigh PureVPN honestly
PureVPN is one paid option with Australian servers and apps for most devices. Like any provider, check the current price, refund policy and reviews, and compare it with a couple of alternatives.

How the unlock works: to get the bonus you'll be asked to try one sponsored app or offer from our partner. It's optional, the guide above is complete without it, and the sponsor pays us when you complete their offer. Only do it if the app genuinely interests you.
